Enhanciar vs Onyx (Danswer): a hosted alternative
Onyx, formerly Danswer, is the best-known open-source option for AI search over company apps. If you don’t want to run servers, or want the follow-up done too, here is the honest comparison.
- Your data must stay on your own servers or in an air-gapped network.
- You want open source you can read and change (Onyx Community Edition is MIT-licensed).
- You want to run your own models through Ollama, vLLM or LiteLLM.
- You have someone to deploy, monitor and upgrade it, or you prefer Onyx Cloud with SOC 2 Type II.
- You want a hosted Onyx or Danswer alternative: no Docker, Kubernetes, index storage or upgrades to run.
- You want the answer to turn into work: a Gmail reply saved to Drafts, a Jira or Linear ticket, a Notion page, a Slack post or a calendar event, each waiting in an Actions queue until a person approves it. Onyx’s docs describe custom actions but no approval step.
- You need every answer to link to the exact Slack message, email, doc paragraph, ticket or line of code, or you won’t trust it.
- Engineers ask too: it reads GitHub (syncing on every push), answers “what breaks if I change this?” and reviews pull requests on repos where you turn it on.
- You want one flat price: Solo $24/month, or Team $100/month for up to 10 people, not per seat. Ten people on Onyx Cloud Business is $200 a month, billed annually.

No human-approval step is described |
| Reviews pull requests | Yes, on repos where you turn it on; posted on the PR with the whole codebase as context | Not stated |

| Hosting | Hosted only, on Google Cloud (content stored in Mumbai, India); Enterprise gets a dedicated deployment; no self-hosted version | Onyx Cloud, or self-host on your own servers, VPC or Kubernetes; can run air-gapped |
| Setup | Self-serve: sign up, paste an AI key, connect a source and ask the same day; the first sync of a big source takes longer | Cloud: self-serve with a trial. Self-host: Docker Compose or Kubernetes, which you run and upgrade |

Ask it anything. Hand it the follow-up.
After the answer, say what you need. It drafts the work and waits in your Actions queue for a person to approve.
Orange dot: waits for your approval. Teal dot: pull-request review posts on its own, only on repos where you turn it on.
What actually differs
Both answer questions from company apps with citations, both have an MCP server, and both let you choose your own model. Onyx’s advantage is control: self-host it anywhere, including air-gapped, with self-hosted models. That control has a cost in people’s time: someone deploys it, keeps the indexes healthy and upgrades it.
Enhanciar is hosted only (there is no self-hosted version; Enterprise gets a dedicated deployment), so there is nothing to run. It also goes past search: after an answer you can say “file that as a Linear ticket” or “draft the reply”, and the draft waits in an Actions queue until a person approves it. It reads Google Calendar and Postgres or MySQL databases, which Onyx’s connector list does not include. Enhanciar’s SOC 2 Type II audit is in progress, not finished; it has no Microsoft Teams app and no CRM or HR connectors yet.
Searching for a “hosted Danswer alternative”? Onyx Cloud is the hosted version of Onyx itself; Enhanciar is a different hosted product with approval-first follow-ups. Compare both against Glean and Dust too.

Things people ask.
Is Onyx the same as Danswer?
Yes. Danswer renamed itself Onyx; the open-source project lives at github.com/onyx-dot-app/onyx.
How much does Onyx cost?
Self-hosting the MIT-licensed Community Edition has no licence fee. Onyx Cloud Business is $20 per user a month, billed annually; Enterprise (SSO, on-premise and region-specific deployments) is contact sales.
What is a hosted alternative to Onyx or Danswer?
Onyx Cloud is Onyx’s own hosted version. Other hosted options include Enhanciar, which answers from Slack, Gmail, Drive, Notion, Confluence, Jira, Linear, Zendesk, GitHub and databases with a link to every source and drafts follow-ups for approval, and Glean and Dust.
Can Onyx create Jira tickets?
Onyx supports custom actions that admins add through MCP or OpenAPI; its docs do not describe a human approval step. Enhanciar drafts Jira and Linear tickets, Gmail drafts, Slack posts and more, and each waits until a person approves it.
Can I self-host Enhanciar?
No. Enhanciar is hosted; content is stored on Google Cloud in Mumbai, India. Enterprise customers get a dedicated deployment. If you must self-host, Onyx is the better fit.
How much does Enhanciar cost?
Solo is $24 a month and Team is $100 a month for up to 10 people (one flat price, not per seat), billed monthly; Enterprise is custom. Every plan is paid, and you bring your own Gemini, OpenAI or Anthropic key and pay that provider directly; Enhanciar adds $0 on AI usage.
